Q3

Explanation / Answer

1)

Following three properties can be used to distinguish between organic and inorganic compounds

i) Generally the organic compounds are insoluble or less soluble in water, while inorganic compounds are mostly soluble. Organic compounds contain covalent bonds and are nonpolar, so they are insoluble in water. Most of inorganic compound form ionic bond, so they are soluble in water.

ii) Organic compounds have strong odors. Aromatic organic compounds have sweeter smell. Most of inorganic compounds are odorless.

iii) Organic compounds and are highly inflammable and volatile, while inorganic compounds are not inflammable.

2) Inorganic substance

Explanation: It would be an inorganic substance, because it shows properties of inorganic compounds. An inorganic compound has no odor, is soluble in water, and is not flammable.

3) Organic substance

Explanation: It would be an organic substance, because it has strong smell and does not dissolve in water.

4)

a) Propane

b) 2,3-Dimethylpentane

c) 2,3-Dimethylbutane
