Question
Which reaction produces a decrease in the entropy of the system? A) CaCO3 (s) CaO (s) + CO2 (g) B) 2C (s) + O2 (g) 2CO (g) C) CO2 (s) CO2 (g) D) 2H2 (g) + O2 (g) 2H2O (l) E) H2O (l) H2O (g)I’m wondering why B does not decrease. Which reaction produces a decrease in the entropy of the system? A) CaCO3 (s) CaO (s) + CO2 (g) B) 2C (s) + O2 (g) 2CO (g) C) CO2 (s) CO2 (g) D) 2H2 (g) + O2 (g) 2H2O (l) E) H2O (l) H2O (g)
I’m wondering why B does not decrease. Which reaction produces a decrease in the entropy of the system? A) CaCO3 (s) CaO (s) + CO2 (g) B) 2C (s) + O2 (g) 2CO (g) C) CO2 (s) CO2 (g) D) 2H2 (g) + O2 (g) 2H2O (l) E) H2O (l) H2O (g)
I’m wondering why B does not decrease.
Explanation / Answer
Answer
D) 2H2(g) + O2(g) <------> 2H2O(l)
Explanation
In B no of mole of products is decreasing and in this respect entropy is decreasing but product is in gaseous state but one of the reactant is gaseous state and in this respect entropy is increasing.
But in D ,entropy is decreasing in both respect decreasing in no of mole ( 3 mole to 2mole ) and phase change( gas to liquid)
