CHM 2210-USFSP PROBLEM SET #1 Which of the following alkanes would have the highest boiling point? CH3 CH3 CH3-CH2 CH2- CH2-CH2-CH2 CH3 CH2- C-CH CH3 CH3 CH3- CH2 CH2 CH2-CH-CH3 CH3-CH CH2-CH CH3 CH3 CH3 CH3 2. What is the total number of sigma bonds found in the following compound? CH3-CH= C= CH-C= C-H (a) 8 (b) 10 (c) 11 (d) 15 3. What is the total number of pi bonds found in the following compound? (a) 1 (b) 2 4. Which representation for the Lewis structure of HNO, is correct? O: HO-N HO-NC (c) H-O-NExplanation / Answer
1) branched chain alkanes have lower boiling point because branching leads to smaller area of contact between the molecules thus they have weak vanderwaal forces. So, smaller energy is needed to overcome the intermolecular force.
Where as straight chain alkanes have strong vanderwaal forces, because the molecules lies in closer vicinity to each other. So, they have high boiling point.
So, compound A ie n-heptane has highest boiling point.
2) sigma bonds in C-H bond of the compound = 6
Sigma bonds in C-C bond of the compound = 5
Total sigma bonds = 6+5
=11
3) There are only 2 pi bonds in the given compound ie between C tiple bond C.
