Question
Le SCH3U-Chemistry Thought Lab: Combustion Reactions Purpose:What are the products of the combustion of natural gas? Evidence: A beaker of cold water moved though the flame condenses a clear, colourless liquid. No black deposit is observed. Limewater was added to the gas produced, and the result was a cloudy mixture. This is indicative of the presence of carbon dioxide. According to the evidence provided what is the answer to the purpose? a. Evaluate the evidence collected. For example, is it possible to Analysis: Evaluation: determine whether the combustion was complete? b. Suggest an improvement to this experiment to be more certain about the type of combustion.Explanation / Answer
In the evidence part there was two important point mentioned. First is that the gas is soluble in water and second is it forms cloudy when it passes through lime water. Which means the gas is completely soluble in water. we know that the solubility of carbon monoxide is very low in the water. so first point indicating that there was no CO present.
in the second point of evidence, it gives a clear picture about the Presence of Carbon dioxide.
so the Evidence is somehow proving that the only presence of carbon dioxide and non-presence of carbon monoxide.
We know that carbon monoxide is colorless gas but it burns with a 'Pale Blue Flame' so this property could be used for identification of types of combustion. if the combustion will not be completed there will be a production of carbon monoxide, if we burn further it will burn with an indication of pale blue flame.
