Question
PRELAB QUESTIONS (RESPOND ON A SEPARATE SHEET OF PAPER): nique, what is the physical or chemical basis for separation of compounds with TLC? 2. Draw the structures of the analgesics being tested in this experiment. 3. Are the compounds in (2) polar? What intermolecular forces are present in each of the 4. If the stationary phase is polar, which compound do you expect to travel the furthest on compounds? the plate? Why? Be sure to get the report from the course website and complete all sections carefully following all of the directions.Explanation / Answer
TLC plate is used for seperation a mixture of liquids on the basis of adsorbtion vales, There are threee major constituents of this process: these are Stationary pase , mobile phase and the solute.
Separation is basicaly done as a result of competition between mobike phase and solute to bind to stationary phase.
Lets take an example where silica gel is the stationary phase , which is coated generally on the TLC plates. here Silicon and oxygen have alternating bonds on the molecular level with OH groups on the surface . Silica gel is very polar in nature and supports Hydrogen bonding due to presence of Oxygen atoms .
The solvent and the solute bind to the silica gel due this difference in polartiy and are carrried upwards by the capilery action . The species which is strongly adsorbed moves upward slower than the species weakly adosrbed and this is basically the seperation. If there are two species A and B , and B binds strongly than A , then it implies that it spends lesser time in mobile phase . Hence it is lesser in the equilibrium side of mobile phase and more in the equilibrium side of stationary phase,
The second and third part of the question can not be answerd without missing information
