Question

Approximately how many milligrams of calcium would you ingest by drinking eight 8-oz glasses of your local water? Hints: 1 oz (fluid ounce) 29.57 mL and the units of ppm can also be expressed as mg/L Show your work clearly with all units. 2. Assume an average minimum daily requirement for calcium is 1,150 mg. Calculate what percentage of your daily requirements could be met by drinking 1.0 L of your local water. Note: this is a different problem from the one above. Show all work. 3. 4. Speculate as to why the Pacific Northwest has relatively soft water compared to, say, the Midwest

Explanation / Answer

2. Ppm=mg/l

29.57 ml/1000= 0.2957L in one ounce of glass of water

Eight glasses of 8 oz of water so

0.2957× 64 = 1.892 L

The hardness of water was found say 336 ppm (336 mg/L) so

336mg×1.892 = 635mg of calcium

3.

For one litre we have 336mg

So

1.0L× 336mg= 336mg

1.0L

% = 336/1150 ×100

= 0.2921× 100

= 29.217%
