Add the aqueous solution of bromine drop byBromine or its, solutions drop to a solution of approximately 20 mg (or 1 drop) of the sample in 1 mL of water. can cause serious burns Stop when the bromine color is no longer discharged. A positive test is obtained if a on the skin and should sparingly soluble derivative precipitates and the solution becones strongly acidic (as aw indicated by pH paper). be handlea with great care. Try this test on phenol and the unknown. Write equations to describe the results each case. EXERCISE 7. Aqueous bromine converts aniline to 2,4,6-tribromoaniline and HBr. Explanation / Answer

Amines are basic and are soluble in acidic solutions

Here the product is 2,4,6-tribromo aniline.   NH2 is bonded to electron withdrwaing phenyl group which decreases the basicity of amines. Further there are 3 electron withdrwaing groups Br in 2,4,6 positions which cause decrease in electron density on N further. Thus 2,4,6-tribromo aniline is very weakly basic ( i.e doesnot act as base) Thus it doensot have good solubility with acidic solution HBr   ( bases are soluble in acidic ).
