Question
Using the table below, and the three bulleted points below. Calculate the net yield of ATP (assuming 4 H+ are required for the synthesis of 1 ATP via ATP synthase) from the complete oxidation of C14:0. Indicate the numer of ATP (generated through substrate-level phosphorylation), Acetyl CoA, NADH, and FADH2 that are generated through this process. The net production should account for the “activation” of fatty acids by Acyl CoA synthetase (= to 2 ATP).

Explanation / Answer
In complete oxidation of fatty acid C14:O ,7 acetyl coA,6 NADH and 6 FADH2 is generated.
so,7 acetyl coA= 7 acetyl coA x 10ATP= 70 ATP (since 1 acetyl coA=10 ATP)
6 NADH = 6 X 2.5 ATP =15 ATP (since 1 NADH=2.5 ATP)
6 FADH2 = 6 X 1.5 ATP =9 ATP (since 1 FADH2=1.5 ATP)
2 ATP are required in activation of fatty acids by Acyl CoA synthetase
Therefore,Net ATP produced=70+15+9-2=92 ATP
