Post-lab Questions: The following mechanism has been proposed for this reaction: H2O2(aq) + ITaq)- IO(aq) + H20(aq) / H2Odaq) + IO (aq) I-(aq) + HO(l) + O2(g) (1) Determine the rate law for each step in the two step mechanism described above. (2) What would the overall rate law be if the first step was fast and the second step was slow? (3) What would the overall rate law be if the second step was fast and the first step was slow? (4) Consider the rate law you derived from your data. If this mechanism is correct for the reaction you studied, which step must be the rate-determining step? Please explain your choice. (5) What role is the iodide ion (I) playing in this reaction?Explanation / Answer
Post-lab questions
(a) rate law for first step, rate = k[H2O2][I-]
rate law for the second step, rate = k[H2O2][IO-]
(2) If second step is the slow step, rate = [H2O2][IO-]
(3) If first step is slow step, rate = [H2O2][I-]
(4) the second step must be the rate determining step as the first step os only the activatiom of H2O2.
(5) I- acts as the catalyst for the reaction.
