Question
Although there are many similarities, transcription is not exactly the same between prokaryotes and eukaryotes. In a 100-150 word essay, answer the following questions:
What is one thing that is different between transcription initiation in prokaryotes vs. eukaryotes? What is one thing that is different between transcription termination in prokaryotes vs. eukaryotes? What is one thing that is exactly the same between prokaryotes and eukaryotes as it relates to transcription initiation, transcription elongation, and transcription termination (one thing for each stage of transcription)?
Explanation / Answer
One thing that is different between transcription initiation in prokaryotes and eukaryotes is that in case of prokaryotic transcription initiation no proteins or initiation factors are needed while in case of eukaryotes transcription factors are needed. One thing that is different between transcription termination in prokaryotes and eukaryotes is that termination in prokaryotes termination can occur either by rho-dependent or rho-independent mechanisms while in case of eukaryotes transcription is terminated by poly(A) signal and downstream terminator sequence. One thing that is exactly same between prokaryotes and eukaryotes as it related to transcription is that trnascription is initiated from more than one site in both types of organims. Also magenesium ions are used by polymerases to facilitate transcription in both.
