Question
3. From the observations made in part B identify the best recrystallization solvent for each compound. Also include the following: During a recrystallization procedure, you have boiled the solution for a long time so that significant amount of solvent has evaporated. What is likely to happen and how should you deal with it? 2. By inspecting the structures of the following compounds, suggest a plausible crystallization solvent for each of them and explain your choices. ço2H OH naphthalene 2-indanol phenylacetic acid SO CHs dimethylfumarate 4-phenyleyclohexanone Phenylacetic acid should be benzoic acid.Explanation / Answer
Purification techniques
1. If some solvent has evaporated during boiling the solution for recrystallization, some part of compound would come out of solution immediately or this may hamper recrystallization as the solution is now super-saturated in nature. Therefore additional solvent must be added and reheated before cooling down for the formation of crystals.
2. Recrystallization solvents for,
naphthalene : methanol would be the best solvent. The solvent would not dissolve naphthalene completely at room temperature but dissolves fully at high temperature.
2- indanol : polar compound, water can be used as a solvent
phenylacetic acid : being polar, water may be used for recrystallization
4-phenylcyclohexanone : hydrocarbon type, bext solvent would be cyclohexane
dimethylfumarate : esters are low polarity compounds, can be recrystallized using benzene.
