1. [6 Points] Ind T F Th icate whether each of the following statements are true or false: e majority of generation reactions are second-order F H eat transfer by conduction requires a physical medium but heat transfer by convection does not require a physical medium If the earth had no atmosphere, the average temperature would be much higher Most chemical reactions are irreversible For a batch reactor, the accumulation rate is equal to the reaction rate The solubility product may be important for the carbonate acid-base system T F T T T F F F 2. [4 points] Explain the difference between sensible and latent heat.

Explanation / Answer

2) Difference between Sensible and latent heat is as follows:

All system possess some amount of internal energy for sure. Now, this internal energy is further divided into 2 parts. The part of it which is responsible for the kinetic energies of the molecules of the substance is referred as Sensible energy/heat.

Now we know that individual particles have some definite energy and it varies with the change in Temperature. So if we increase the Temperature the sensible heat will also be increased.

On the other hand, the latent heat is a part of the internal energy which is responsible for the change in phase of that substance.

Meaning the amount of heat or energy which is able to break or alter the molecular interactions of that substance which is resulting in the change in phase of it is known as Latent heat.

So clearly latent heat will be more in comparison with sensible heat.

1)

6) True. The solubility will vary with the concentration and the change in solubility can cost us our lives. For humans to maintain the equilibrium of the acid-base carbonate system various body functions take place. For example, our lungs secrete acid to maintain the bicarbonate buffer system in our body.

5) False. For a batch reactor accumulation rate = Input rate - Output rate + Reaction rate

4) True.In most chemical reactions usually, there is a change in phase of the molecules which is quite difficult to undo.

3) True.If there was no atmosphere then all the amount of radiation from the cosmos will be directly absorbed by the earth without any filter or protective layers. Hence the avg temperature of the planet will increase incredibly.

2) False. Both conduction and convection require a medium to transfer its energy. But there is a slight difference.Conduction needs a proper continuous physical medium but in convection, the heat can be transferred via molecular disturbance or energy re-distribution.

1) True. As the majority of cases will generate more than one products.
