Question

Guidance for Writing Your Text In studying the resources and writing your text consider the issues raised by the following questions: 1. What is homeostasis? 2. What is acidosis? . What is a buffer and how does it work? 4. What equilibrium reactions are involved in the carbonic acid/bicarbonate buffer system? 5. What are the metabolic and physiological processes that increase the concentration of protons and carbon dioxide in the blood during exercise? 6. How does the carbonic acid/bicarbonate buffer system respond to the stress? 7. What other pathways does the body use to remove excess protons, carbon dioxide or bicarbonate from the blood, and what effect do each of these pathways have on the pH of the blood? Writing Prompt Write a paragraph of the required length on how the bicarbonate system maintains homeostasis in the blood system. In your paragraph address the issues rasied in the Guidance for Writing Your Text. Remember, however, that you are writing an essay, not just answering a list of questions. Your essay should follow standard academic writing practices. It should be grammatically correct, free of spelling and mechanical errors. Include an introductory and summary sentence and transitions between ideas to provide logical flow. Your topic sentence should specifically introduce the concepts and ideas relevant to the rest of the essay. Your summary sentence should summarize the ideas and concepts you discussed in the essay.

Explanation / Answer

1) Homeostasis is the property of a system with in an organism in which a variable such as the concentration of substance in a solution is actively regulated to maintain it a constant.

2)Acidosis ia the process causing increased acidity in blood and tissues.

3) Buffer is a solution which resists the change in pH when a acid or alkali is added to it. It is usually a mixture of week acid and its conjugate base.

When hydrogen ions are added to a buffer they will be nuetralized by the base in the buffer. Hydroxide ions are nuetralized by the acid and these nuetralization reactions does not effect the change of pH of buffer.

4)

CO2 + H2O ------> H2CO3 ------> HCO3- + H+

These reaction are equilibrium reactions

pH is maintained constant by the weak acid carbonic acid and its conjugate base HCO3-
