Question

Molecular Mode·and Ceralent Boiling Report QUESTIONS Under what circumstances is the molecular geometry around a central atom the same as the electron pair geometry? Which of the following molecules fits this description? SFs and SPo I. 2. Two skeleton structures are shown below for CH F2 Use your molecular models to explain why these are not isomers of one another but instead represent the same molecule. H-C-H H-C-F 3. The Lewis Stracture for SClz is given below. It might appear from the two-dimensional drawing that the dipoles of the two S-CI bonds should cancel one another to yield a nonpolar molecule. Use your molecular models to explain why this molecule is polar. CI-S-Cl 4. Determine the electron domain geometry and the molecular geometry around the central atom in SeO2 IFs and IFs 5. Determine whether the three substances in the above problem are polar.

Explanation / Answer

The molecular geometry around a central atom will be same as electron pair geometry when there is no lone pair of electrons in the atom. In this case repulsion from all the sides will be equal thus the molecular geometry and electron pair geometry will be same .

SF6 best fits the description where S (Sulphur) is surrounded by six Fluorine atoms which exert an equal repulsion from each side leaving no lone pair on Sulphur .
