Question

i need help with b and c

b) if Keq is 1.7x10^-3 are products or reactans preferred ?

c) if cooling the solution shifts the equilibrium toward the products then what can be said about the reaction?

3. Water reacts with dissolved CO2 to form carbonic acid (H2CO,) in the following reaction: H2CO3(aq) H2O(l) + CO2(aq) Reactan+ a. Write the equilibrium expression for the reaction b. If Keq is 1.7 x103 are products or reactants preferred? c. If cooling the solution shifts the equilibrium toward the products then what can be said about the reaction?

Explanation / Answer

Ans. #b. Given, Keq = 1.7 x 10-3 = 0.0017            - statement 1

We also have, Keq = [H2CO3] / ([H2O] [CO2])       - statement 2

Comparing statement 1 and 2-

            0.0017 = [H2CO3] / ([H2O] [CO2])

            Or, 0.0017 x ([H2O] [CO2]) = [H2CO3]

That is, the concertation of product H2CO3 is around 588 times (1 / 0.0017 = 588) lower than the multiplied concentrations of reactants.

In more simple terms, [Product] << [Reactants].

Therefore, reactants are preferred in the given reaction.

#c. Given, loss of heat (cooling) from solution shifts the equilibrium to the right or towards product formation. That is-

            Reactant Heat -----------> Product + Heat

            Or,

Reactant -----------> Product + Heat                               - reaction 1

“Heat” on right side of the equation of reaction (reaction 1) indicates that the process of product formation is exothermic. So, removal of heat (one of the product of the reaction) from the reaction medium keeps the equilibrium shifted towards the right to equilibrate the equilibrium.

Therefore, it tells that the forward reaction (product formation) is exothermic.
