7. (2) Why is acetic acid needed for the reaction to take place? (Use a chemical equation to explain) 8.(2) Why is IR such a good method to assess the purity of the product of this oxidation reaction? 9. (4) Rank the following compounds by highest oxidation (1) to lowest oxidation (4) state Below the ranking, write the number of how many bonds carbon has to a more electronegative atom. 10. (2) This lab uses commerical bleach instead of the typical chromium(VI) reagents to perform the oxidation. Why?Explanation / Answer
Oxidation lab
7. Acetic acid is added in the reaction to generate oxidizing agent HOCl,
The chemical reaction being,
NaOCl + CH3COOH ---> HOCl + CH3COONa
8. IR is a good method to test for the purity of the product formed.
IR shows a string clear C=O stretching frequency If present at about 1700 cm-1
Cyclohexanol starting material on the other hand shows a broad peak at 3200-3400 cm-1 region, while no peak in 1500-1800 cm-1 region.
Therefore, If the product sample has only peak at 1700 cm-1 and no peak at 3200-3400 cm-1 it tells us our product is pure with no starting material impurity left.
9. Ranking of compounds on the basis of oxidation states
CH3CH2CH3 [1]
CH3CH2CH2OH [2]
CH3CH2CHO [3]
CH3CH2COOH [4]
10. Commercial bleach is a green reagent, that means it does not lead to wastes after the reaction which would have to be disposed off. Whereas, the chromium reagent we get lot of solid waste generated after the reaction which adds to the process cost and is less economical and not green process.
