Question

A series of dye solutions are made by adding water to the stock Red 40 dye solution.

so what next? 20 um where and why?

macmillan learning Use the food dye lab to answer the following question. A series of dye solutions are made b ve either the dilution ratio or the final concentration of the dye solution. Árrange the dye solutions in order from highest to lowest concentration Highest concentration of dye 1.0 mL dye, 0 mL water 3.0 mL dye, 1.0 mL water 3.0 mL dye, 3.0 ml water 2.0 mL dye, 6.0 mL water 20 M dye solution Lowest concentration of dye Incorrect. Each of the dilution ratios are currently arranged in the correct order of concentration, but the 20 uM dye solution has not been placed correctly. Note that the concentration of the stock dye solution is 32 LM. O Previous Give Up & View Solution Try Again O Next- 1 Ex

Explanation / Answer

Solution:- Concentration of the stock dye solution is 32 uM(micro mol/L). So, the highest concentration would be when no water is added to this stock solution.

1.0 mL dye, 0 mL water means no water is added to 32 uM stock solution and hence it's concentration is the highest.

3.0 mL dye, 1.0 mL water means 1 mL water is added to 3.0 mL dye, so the total volume would be 4.0 mL.

M1V1 = M2V2

M2 = 32 uM x 3.0 mL/4.0mL = 24 uM

for the next one, M2 = 32 uM x 3.0 mL/6.0mL = 16 uM

for next one, M2 = 32 uM x 2.0 mL/8.0 mL = 8 uM

So, highest to lowest concentration order would be...

1.0 mL dye, 1 mL water > 3.0 mL dye, 1.0 mL water > 20 uM dye solution > 3.0 mL dye, 3.0 mL water > 2.0 mL dye, 6.0 mL water
