Question

Diesel is a mixture of hydrocarbons with between 8 and 21 carbon atoms. The average empirical formula for the misture that is diesel corresponds to Ci2H23- Biodiesel is a fatty acid ester that can be synthesized from the fatty acids (stearic acid or linoleic acid) in plants or from used cooking ol, such as canols oil or soybean oil. A typical component of blodesel has the formula CsoH3s02- (a) write and balance the combustion reaction for diesel (Cs2H23) and for biodiesel (CigHj602). Explanation / Answer

Ans

a) The combustion reaction of diesel is given as :

4C12H23 (l) + 71O2 (g) ---> 48CO2 (g) + 46H2O (g)

The combustion reaction of biodiesel is given as :

C19H36O2 (l) + 27O2 (g) = 19CO2 (g) + 18H2O (g)

Ans b)

i)

1 kg of diesel = 1000 / 167.3 = 5.98 moles

5.98 moles of diesel will make 71.7 moles of CO2

So the amount of CO2 = 71.7 x 44.01 = 3.156 kg

= 3.156 kg CO2/ kg diesel.

ii)

1 kg of biodiesel = 1000 / 296.49 = 3.37 moles

3.37 moles of biodiesel will make 64.1 moles of CO2

So the amount of CO2 = 64.1 x 44.01 = 2.82 kg

= 2.82 kg CO2 / kg biodiesel
