Question

1. The cabin pressure has just dropped on a fighter jet. The pressure gauge says 633 torr. Anytime the cabin pressure drops below 0.900 atm, the pilot is required to put on an oxygen mask.

A. Calculate the pressure in atm.

B. Calculate the pressure in psi.

C.  Calculate the pressure in kPa.

2. A sample of gas occupies a volume of 486 mL at 508 torr. At constant temperature, what will be the new pressure when the volume changes to the following:

A.  352 mL _____ torr

B.  4.80 L_____ torr

3. A sample of CH4 gas was collected over water at 29 ºC and 646 mm Hg. What is the partial pressure of the CH4? (The vapor pressure of water at 29 ºC is 30.0 torr.)

4. A mixture contains H2 at 258 torr pressure, N2 at 336 torr pressure, and O2 at 584 torr pressure. What is the total pressure of the gases in the system?

Explanation / Answer

1-A)

Since 1 atm = 760 torr, the required conversion factor is (1 atm / 760 torr).

Pressure in atm = 633 torr x ( 1 atm / 760 torr) = 0.833 atm

1-B)

Since 1 atm = 14.6959 psi, the required conversion factor is 14.6959 psi/ 1 atm.

Pressure in psi = 633 torr x (1 atm/760 torr) x ( 14.6959 psi/1 atm) = 12.2 psi

1-C)

Since 1 atm = 101.325 kPa, the required conversion factor is 101.325 kPa/ 1 atm.

Pressure in kPa = 633 torr x ( 1 atm/760 torr) x ( 101.325 kPa/1 atm) = 84.4 kPa
