Sec. Enzymes in Action Kit Pre Lab Questions: Enzyme terminology You will be working with models to understand aspects of enzymes. The following terms will be covered. Identify which are described in the categories of the questions below. Each term should be used only once. Enzyme Substrate Active Site Products Catalysis Proteins Metabolism Catabolism Anabolism Induced Fit Model Lock and Key Model Specificit Competitive inhibition Noncompetitive inhibition Allosteric site Activation Energy Exothermic Endothermic 1. To what class of biomolecules do enzymes belong? 2. Which terms describe a process? 3. Which terms describe a biomolecule? 4. Which terms describe specific parts of a biomolecule? 5. Which 2 terms describe ways of describing enzyme action? 6. Which terms pertain to the energy of reactions regulated by enzymes?Explanation / Answer
Ans. #1. Protein. Enzymes belong to the Protein class of biomolecules.
#2. Catalysis, Metabolism, Catabolism, Anabolism, Competitive inhibition, Non-competitive inhibition,
All the terms mentioned above define a “process”.
#3. Enzyme, Substrate. Enzyme (Class protein), and Substrate (ma be any of the four classes of biomolecules) are biomolecule.
#4. Active site and Allosteric site describe the specific parts of a biomolecule (here, for enzyme). Active site binds to the substrate. An allosteric site binds to the allosteric modulators or ligands.
Induced –fit model, and Lock and Key model describe the active site of an enzyme and conformation change in enzyme during substrate/ligand binding. So, these models specify the nature of active site or specify the nature of specific sites on enzyme (a biomolecule).
#5. Specificity, Activation Energy. Enzymes lower the activation energy of the reactions they catalyze. Enzymes are highly specific to the substrate they binds and reaction they catalyze.
#6. Exothermic, Endothermic. An enzyme catalyzed-reaction is said to be endothermic if it requires energy (ATP) input. An enzyme catalyzed-reaction is said to be exothermic if it produces energy (ATP).
