It was also used as a chemical weapon in World War II, and is a common hazard in many industrial plants. Download a safety data sheet SDS) for phosgene from Sigma-Aldrich or another reputable website. a, Based on the SDS, draw an ANFPA diamond diagram for this compound (a color print is not required, as long as the hazard classes are in the correct order). b. List the major health hazards which might be expected for everyday work with phosgene c. What is the TLV-TWA for phosgene? Your text has TLV data tabulated in the Appendix. Note: Because it is a hazardous gas, phosgene is often sold as a solution in toluene - don't confuse the TWA for phosgene with the TWA for the toluene solvent. d. What symptoms would you expect to observe a co-worker was exposed to phosgene concentrations above the TLV-C? Would you need any special protective equipment to rescue your co-worker? If you're unfamiliar with the medical terms, you should learn what they mean (Wikipedia?)

Explanation / Answer

1. Phosgene safety

a. Drawn below is the MFPA diamond structure for phosgene

b. Health hazards when exposed to phosgene,

It causes severe burn to the skin and eyes. If inhaled causes burns to the respiratory tract. If inhaled it also is considered fatal and immediate medical attention is adviced in such an case.

c. Since phosgene is a hazardous gas, the TLV-TWA data gives a value of 0.1 ppm exposure limit.

d. When phosgene is inhaled by the worker, he/she may have problem in breathing. Proper breathing masks are adviced for working with phosgene. If exposed eyes, irritation would occur, wash with lots of warm water and proper medical attention is adviced. When exposed severly to the skin, frostbite occurs, wash with lots of warm water and cover the worker with blankets to keep him/her warm. Immediate medical attention is adviced in all such cases. Wearing proper clothing, along with safety glasses, working in properly well ventilated area would ensure minimal exposure to the gas.
