One question about textile engineering

i. Identify the possible consequence(s) of presence of metal ions in cotton bleaching baths using your knowledge of chemistry and textile engineering. 2. Provide a simple model for representing the mechanism causing this problem using your knowledge of chemistry 3. Choose convenient application method and sequestering agent(s) to solve the problem. 4. Evaluate the success possibility of your solution by comparing the method and chemical chosen with other possible alternatives taking into consideration their solubilities, complex stabilities, complex forming abilities, ecological effects (including biodegradability

Explanation / Answer

1)

Cotton has some natural yellowish brown colouring material in it, it is necessery to remove this material to increase its whiteness and absorbancy capacity of the cloth , for this bleaching processs is used .

For bleaching high level of alkalinity is required, Hydrogen peroxide is the most commonly used bleaching agent ,pressence of metal ions like copper , iron chromium, nickel, manganese during peroxide bleaching damages the cloth. As the decomposition rate of hydrogen peroxide increases due to metal ions it increases oxycellulose/ hydrocellulose as a result fibre damage increases.copper and iron contamination usually occurs at pre bleaching stage . Copper comes from brass rollers , and steam pipes , Iron found as a rust from machine bearing and from water and steam used in processing
