Question

The bond between nitrogen atoms in N2 molecules is very strong, making N2 very unreactive. Because of this, magnesium is one of the few metals that react with nitrogen gas directly. This reaction yields solid magnesium nitride. (a) Write a complete balanced equation, without including states, for the reaction between magnesium and nitrogen to form magnesium nitride. (Use the lowest possible whole number coefficients.) chemPad Help Greek (b) Write a conversion factor that could be used to convert between moles of magnesium, and moles of magnesium nitride. (Use the lowest possible whole number factors.) mol magnesium mol magnesium nitride (c) How many moles of magnesium nitride form when 1.8 moles of magnesium react completely? mol (d) Write a conversion factor that could be used to convert between moles of nitrogen, and moles of magnesium nitride mol nitrogen mol magnesium nitride (e) How many moles of nitrogen react to yield 2.377 moles of magnesium nitride? 4 mol

Explanation / Answer

1.3Mg(s)+N2(g)------->Mg3N2(s)

2. From the stoichiometry of the reaction, 3 moles of Mg reacts with 1mole of N2 to give 1 mole of Mg3N2

so for converting the moleof Mg to moels of Mg3N2, moles of Mg3N2= moles of Mg/3

3. 1.8 moles of Mg gives 1.8/3= 0.6 moles of Mg3N2

4. 1 mole of N2 gives 1 mole of Mg3N2. So conversion factor is =1

5. 2.377 moles of Mg3N2 requires 2.377 moles of N2.
