Question

Sorbic acid a natural compound and preservative in foods has the following mass percensageula if C (64.29 %), H (7.14%), O (28.57%) Determine the empirical formula and the molecular the molar mass is 112.0 (8 pt) CuF2 contains 37.42% F by mass. Calculate the mass of fluoride (in pans) contained in 724 g of CuF2 (4 pt) . Write i) a balanced chemical reaction, ii) the complete ionic and the ii) net ionic reaction occurring in the following reactions. (5 pt each) HS04- . + Mg(OH)2 . Calculate the percent nitrogen in CaNO2h (4pt)

Explanation / Answer

1)

we have mass of each elements as:

C: 64.29 g

H: 7.14 g

O: 28.57 g

Divide by molar mass to get number of moles of each:

C: 64.29/12.01 = 5.353

H: 7.14/1.008 = 7.0833

O: 28.57/16.0 = 1.7856

Divide by smallest to get simplest whole number ratio:

C: 5.353/1.7856 = 3

H: 7.0833/1.7856 = 4

O: 1.7856/1.7856 = 1

So empirical formula is:CHO

Molar mass of C3H4O = 3*MM(C) + 4*MM(H) + 1*MM(O)

= 3*12.01 + 4*1.008 + 1*16.0

= 56.062 g/mol

Now we have:

Molar mass = 112.0 g/mol

Empirical formula mass = 56.062 g/mol

Multiplying factor = molar mass / empirical formula mass

= 112.0/56.062

= 2

So molecular formula is:CHO
