Question

5 Figure 6 19 shows eight 6.19 shows eight successive ionization energies for an element What group does this element belong to you explain the very large increase in the th IE relative to the 6th 1 900 800 700 800 500 400 100 Number of electrons removed 6.19 Successive ntion neges for an unknown element 6 Notice that none of the actual elements are located in Group 8A, because none of these elements had been discovered by 1860. In fact, these elements weren't discovered until the 1890s Why do you think it took so long to discover these elements?

Explanation / Answer

ANSWER:

Q5:

As per the graph each ionisation energy is higher than previous one , this is because electron is removed from more positive ion. However There is a sudden jump in ionisation energy when 7th electron is removed. This is due to the fact that 7th electron is removed from inner shell which is less shielded. In other words there are 6 electrons in outer shell. So the element belongs to 16th group. For example oxygen belongs to group 16 and has eight electron. Out of 8 electrons 2 are present in shell1 and outer six are present shell 2, 2 electrons in 2s and 4 in 2p.

Q6.

Elements of group 8A (18th group elements) are inert i.e, these elements are very less reactive. As a result these are rarely found in combined state with other elments making their discovery less likely. This is one of the main reasons that these elements were not discovered untill 1890
