Question

“10. Describe the effect adding water had on the mixture in terms of the Le Chatelier principle”
I know that the solution was saturated, and then adding HCl increased the concentration of Cl forming more solid. Adding water allowed more to be dissolved in terms of saturation
But how can I explain this in terms of the Le Chatelier principle?

Predict and then describe the effect water had on the mixture. Explain the change properly in terms of the LeChatelier principle.

Explanation / Answer

Accorcing to Le chatelier principle, the addition of reactants to the equilibrium results the equilibrium shifts to product side and the addition of product to the equilibrium results the equilibrium shifts to reactant side.

Actual equilibrium: NaCl(aq) + H2O(l) <------> Na+(aq) + Cl-(aq)

So, the addition of H2O (reactant) results the equilibrium towards product side.

Therefore, more solid will be dissolved.
