Question
Practice Problem 1. Chlorine gas can be made from the reaction of manganese dioxide with hydrochloric acid. According to the above reaction, determine the limiting reactant when 56 g of MnO2 are reacted with 7.5 moles of HC1? What is the mass of product in gram? What is the mass of excess reagent in gram. Show work in detail. (3 points) 2. Sulfur dioxide gas reacts with oxygen gas and water according to the chemical reaction below. When 78 g of SO2 are mixed with excess O2 and H:0, how many grams of H:SO4 are produced? Show your work in detail. (2 points) 2SOtg) + 02(g) + 2H20(l) 2H:SOdl)Explanation / Answer
Ans 1 :
In the balanced reaction ,
one mole or 86.9 g of MnO2 reacts with 4 moles or 145.8 g of HCl to form 1 mole of MnCl2 and Cl2 each and two moles of water.
56 g of MnO2 = 56 / 86.9 = 0.64 moles
0.64 moles of MnO2 will require 0.64 x 4 = 2.58 moles of HCl
So clearly MnO2 is the limiting reagnet as HCl is present in excess amount.
Now 0.64 moles of MnO2 will make 0.64 moles of MnCl2 and Cl2 and 0.64 x 2 = 1.29 moles of water
So amount of products in grams :
MnCl2 = 0.64 x 125.8 = 81.1 g
Cl2 = 0.64 x 70.9 = 45.7 g
H2O = 1.29 x 18.0152 = 23.2 g
