Question
(4 pts) Consider three solutions with equal concentrations (in units of mol/L) - NaCI, Na2SO4, and Na3PO4. Predict the order of the solution's conductivity from least to greatest (lowest expected solution conductivity to highest expected solution conductivity) (4 pts) Explain what you think is occurring with the particles at the molecular-level that accounts for the rankings you listed in question #1. You should use precise terminology in this explanation to distinguish whether you think the particles in solution are molecules, atoms, and/or ions.Explanation / Answer
In general, conductivity of solution increases as the numberof ions in the solution increases.
Since all three solutions given are at same concentration, the conductivity is highest for solution that contains highest number ions.
The number of moles ions produced from one mole NaCl is 2 moles (1 mol Na+ + 1 mol Cl-) .
The number of moles of ions produced from one mole Na2SO4 is 3 moles ( 2 mol Na+ + 1 mol SO42-)
The number of moles of ions produced from one mole Na3PO4 is 4 moles (3 mol Na+ + 1 mol PO43-).
So, the Na3PO4 solution has highest conductivity and the NaCl solution has the lowest conductivity.
Therefore, the increasing conductivity order is,
NaCl < Na2SO4 < Na3PO4
