(a) If a compound contains impurities, its will melt at lower temperature than actual mp and temperature range for melting will be wide. If compound is pure it melt within a narrow mp range (1–2 ) which suggests the sample is a pure compound.
1. To confirm the purity of compound better to take mix melting point of known and purified compound. If its same compound and pure than mixture of compound will also gives sharp and actual melting point.
2. take a mp before and after a purification technique.
