Question

The following characteristics of two species were sent to you. unfortunately, the person who sent them to you failed to label the data by species name. They did tell you BOTH ARE BROAD - LEAVED EVERGREEN SPECIES from CALIFORNIA

A.) define light compensation point, Is the LCP directly tied to transpiration rate?

B.) IN full sun, which might have the faster rate of growth starting from the same height?

C.) If both species lived together, in a closed-canopy forest, (all other things being equal) which will have the greater number of seedlings and saplings?

D.) Now, consider the species you said would have the fewer number of seedlings and saplings. Why? Describe the circumstances in which its seedlings would be found

Species A 5% very high Species B Light compensation points Transpiration rates (ideal conditions) 15% moderate-high

Explanation / Answer

A) Compensation point is defined as the point of time when the rate of photosynthesis & rate of respiration for an autotrophic plant is same. Light compensation point is defined as the light intensity at which the amount of carbon dioxide released in respiration equals the amount used in photosynthesis, and the amount of oxygen released in photosynthesis equals the amount used in respiration.

LCP is not directly tied to transpiration rates.

B) In full sun, species B will have the faster rate of growth starting from the same height.

C) Species with greater LCP, will be more responsive to increased light availability and have higher growth rate. Bt this species will also have a higher mortality rate for the seedlings & saplings. Hence the mortality rate of the seedlings of species B will be higher. So if both species lived together, in a closed-canopy forest, species A will have the greater number of seedlings and saplings.

D) The seedlings of species B will be found in shady areas; they will be able to survive in low light areas.
