Question
1. Estimate the amount of product that may be lost as a result of recrystalization of salicylic acid (solubility of salicylic acid at 10 C = 0.14g/100mL of water or .0014 g/mL). If you had used 20mL water to dissolve salicylic acid at 10C.
2. Same exact question but with 4mL of water. Please explain :)
MW of salicylic acid is 138.1. During lab my partner and I collected .675 g of product - not sure if you need that info for this question. The question itself doesn't provide any other information. Please describe the steps, thanks! :)
Explanation / Answer
1.solubility of salicyclic acid in water =0.0014g/ml, this remains in solution when the solution is cooled to 10 deg.c
mass of salicyclic acid in 20ml =20*0.0014 gm =0.028 gm of acid is lost
2. When the volume of water is 4ml, amount lost= 0.0014*4=0.0056 gm
