Question

Why should you only obtain and crush the dry ice just before you are to use it?

1. Dry ice reacts quickly with weigh boats, glassware, and the bench top and should not sit out for any unnecessary amount of time. 2. Dry ice melts at room temperature but we need to use solid dry ice in the reaction. 3. Dry ice is unstable once crushed so it must be used immediately or it may ignite. 4. Dry ice sublimes relatively quickly at room temperature and in doing so would mean less CO2 would be added to the reaction giving a lower yield

Explanation / Answer

(4) Dry ice sublimes relatively quickly at room temperature and in doing so would mean less CO2 would be added to the reaction giving a lower yield.
