Tina is 16 years old and pregnant. She comes with her mother to see the dietitian at the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). Tina is 4 months pregnant and has gained 20 pounds since she became pregnant. She was a little heavy before she became pregnant. She does not smoke, but her mother does.
Tina saw a physician for the first time last week. She has a prescription for prenatal vitamins but has not filled it yet. Tina says she has not felt sick at all. In fact, her mother reports that Tina is eating more than usual, based on the amount of chips and snack foods they are going through. Tina is home for summer break, and she cooks for herself while her mother is at work during the day. During the visit, Tina does not say much. Her mother does most of the talking.
A brief diet history indicates the following:
10 am: 2 doughnuts
Cola
Noon: Hot dog, bologna sandwich, or fried chicken meal
Potato chips
Cola
pm snack: More chips or cookies
Cola (usually a couple through the afternoon)
Dinner: Meat or chicken
Small salad
A vegetable

A.Teena's mother is a smoker.It does place a risk for Teena as well as she becomes a passive smoker which can affect the foetus.Teena is just 16year old and is not actually not a proper age for child birth. She seems to be overweight which is also not a good sign as overweight can also leads to hypertension and that will be a big concern in case of child birth .Her diet mostly consists of junk food that will deprive her of essential vitamins and minerals which is of utmost importance for the growing foetus.
B.Looking at the cas study,it seems Teena is deprived of essential vitamins and minerals and her maximum portion of food contains junk which will not give her any nutrition.Instead it will add to her weight.
C.Looking at the diet chart,its very clear that during breakfast and dinner,Teena is taking mostly fats and very less carbcarbohydrates.Only during dinner time,she is having some inadequate amount of proteins. She definitely needs to take vitamin supplements provided she also needs to have ample amount of fruits and vegetables in her diet.
D.Tina is 4months pregnant and already gained 20 pounds.This is a warning sign and she could gain 20-25 pounds more if she continues having more junk food.She should go for mild exercises ,on the same time she should not strain herself.Brisk walking is highly recommended.She should completely avoid unsaturated fatty food.
E.Yes,Teena and the foetus are at greater risk of being passive smokers.Smoking us injurious to health.It can lead to many life threatening diseases.Inhalation of tobacco can harm the lung of mother and the growing foetus.There are also possibility of abnormal foetal growth.
