Question

In a lab experiment on solubility, I added Sodium Hydroxide (drop by drop) to Zinc Nitrate solution. A precipitate formed. I split the solution into two portions. To one, I continued to add sodium hydroxide. More precipitate formed. To the other, I added nitric acid. The precipitate dissolved.

I need help with:

1. The net ionic equation for the initial reaction of Sodium Hydroxide and Zinc Nitrate

2. The net ionic equation for the beaker to which there was an excess of sodium hydroxide added to the amphoteric hydroxide

3. The net ionic equation for the beaker to which nitric acid was added to the amphoteric hydroxide.

Thanks!

Explanation / Answer

1) 2NaOH(aq) + Zn(NO3)2(aq) -------> Zn(OH)2(s)   + 2NaNO3(aq)   molecular equation

net ionic equation as follows

Zn+2(aq) + 2OH-(aq) -------------> Zn(OH)2(s)

2) if we add exess NaOH

Zn(OH)2(s) + 2Na+(aq) + 2OH-(aq) ------> Na2ZnO2(s)   + H2O(l)

3)  Zn(OH)2(s) + 2H+(aq) ------------> 2H2O(l)   + Zn+2(aq) net ionic equation
