Mass, Moles, Formulas, and Number of Particles 6- A sample of glucose, C,H,20, contains 2.0x 1022 atoms of carbon. a) How many atoms of hydrogen does the sample contain? b) How many molecules of glucose are present within the sample? c) How many moles of glucose does this sample represent? d) What is the mass of this sample in grams? 7- A sample of the female sex hormone estradiol, H202 contains 1.0x 10 atoms of hydrogen. a) How many atoms of carbon does the sample contain? b) How many molecules of estradiol are present within the sample? c) How many moles of estradiol does this sample represent? d) What is the mass of this sample in grams?

Explanation / Answer

6)
a)
there are 6 C and 12 H in 1 molecule
That is number of H = 2*number of C
= 2*2.0*10^22
= 4.0*10^22 atoms
Answer: 4.0*10^22 atoms

b)
1 molecule has 6 carbon
So,
number of molecules = number of Carbon / 6
= (2.0*10^22)/6
= 3.3*10^21 molecules
Answer: 3.3*10^21 molecules

c)
number of mol = number of molecules / Avogadro’s number
number of mol = 3.3*10^21 / 6.022*10^23 mol
number of mol = 5.5*10^-3 mol
Answer: 5.5*10^-3 mol

d)

Molar mass of C6H12O6,
MM = 6*MM(C) + 12*MM(H) + 6*MM(O)
= 6*12.01 + 12*1.008 + 6*16.0
= 180.156 g/mol

mass of C6H12O6,
m = number of mol * molar mass
= 5.5*10^-3 mol * 180.156 g/mol
= 0.99 g

Answer: 0.99 g
