Question
Define both the a and b parameters of the real gas equation: a parameter- b parameter- (b) Consider the following series of gases: H_2, N_2, CH_4, C_2H_6 and C_3H_8. Rank them in terms of increasing b parameter. (c) Consider three identical flasks with different gases: In which flask will the molecules have the greatest average kinetic energy? In which flask will the molecules have the greatest speed? In which flask will have the greatest number of collisions per second with the walls of the container?Explanation / Answer
(a) Definition of a and b parameter
a parameter : In real gas equation, it was assumed that their are no attractive forces between the gas molecules. The correction to this was introduced by a parameter which takes care of the ttractive forces exerted by individual molecules on each other and in turn pressure exerted on the wall of the container.
b parameter : The real gas equation assumes, volume occupied by gas molecules is negligible as compared to the total volume of the gas. To correct for this, parameter b is introduced which takes of volume of gas and gives us effective volume of gas molecules.
(b) arrangement of molecules in increasing order of b value,
H2 < N2 < CH4 < C2H6 < C3H8
(c) Flask with greatest kinetic energy : Flask C
Flask with molecules having greatest speed : Flask C
Flask having greatest number of collisions per second with the walls of the container : Flask C
