Look Up Li-Fraumeni syndrome. Summarize the main features of this syndrome, and describe the molecular mechanisms involved. Do rumors in these patients always exhibit loss of both copies of the relevant gene? Why or why not?Explanation / Answer
Li-Fraumeni syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder. This disorder characterized by a diverse amount of cancers, early onset of cancer, and in most cases development of multiple cancers throughout life.
The spectrum of cancers in the syndrome was shown to include, in addition to breast cancer and soft tissue sarcomas, brain tumors, osteosarcoma, leukemia, and adrenocortical carcinoma.
The syndrome is the result of mutation found in TP53 tumor suppressor gene, which encodes a transcription factor p53. This protein is the regulator of cell cycle. This mutation can be inherited.
No, as this disease is an autosomal dominant, only one defective allele is enough to cause the disease in patients.
