Question

1.) Use the following information for the next three questions. Below is a series of 10-cell crosses between mice with different fur colors (an autosomal recessive trait). Each was tested for genetic complementation. In the table below, (+) indicates wildtype (normal) individuals were seen in their offspring, and (–) indicates only a mutated hair color was seen in their offspring. What are the complementation groups?  (Hint – the wildtype trait will not show complementation)

a) What is the wildtype fur color?

b) how many genes are involved in the traits seen here?

c) Which of the following are the complementation groups for this cross?

2.) Gene R and gene T are genetically linked. Answer the following question concerning a dihybrid organism with the genotype Rt/rT. If the frequency of recombinant gametes is 25%, give the expected frequencies of each gamete produced by the dihybrid.

Explanation / Answer

1.) a. Wildtype fur colour is tan because it does not show complementation with any of the other trait.

b. The complementation groups signify that atleast that many genes are involved in the traits seen. There are four complementation groups:

(i). Brown, Dark grey, black and light grey

(ii). Yellow and white

(iii). Mottled and two-toned

(iv) Reddish

This means that there are atleast 4 genes involved in the traits here

c. The complementation groups for the cross are:

(i) Brown, Dark grey, black and light grey

(ii) Yellow and white

(iii) Mottled and two-toned

(iv) Reddish

2.)  If the frequency of recombinant gametes is 25%, then the expected frequencies of each gamete produced by the dihybrid will be 25% only.
