Question

Analysis of Unknown Acetic Acid solution Unknown Acetic Acid Sample _____ (ID) Vol. Acetic Acid Unknown used _____ mL _____ mL. Initial buret reading _____ mL, mL _____ Final buret reading _____ mL, _____ mL. Vol. NaOH used _____ mL, _____ mL Observations (list any observations you see during this titration - KHP that didnt dissolve or may have been stuck to the neck of the flask, what was the relative intensity of the color of phenolphthalein at the endpoint are the colors the same did the color disappear too fast?)

Explanation / Answer

Phenolphthalein is used as indicator in the acid - base titration. When phenolphthalein is dissolved in acid, the colour of the solution is colourless. During titration, as you add NaOH into the solution, a pink colour develops where the NaOH drop falls into the solution. But the colour disappears as you stir the solution Which indicates that the neutralisation is going on and the solution is still acidic. The end point is indicated by the appearance of stable pink colour throughout the solution. This colour is stable.
