please answer these 6 questions

PART 2 SILICON Flint, glass and quartz are materials mainly consisting of Silica (silicon dioxide). They exhibit very different properties Flint tool Glass Quartz 1. Which of these materials are crystalline, which amorphous and which a smart material? 2. Stone age man used flint to make cutting tools. What are the properties of flint that made it useful for this and how are they explained by its atomic structure? 3. Explain how the atomic structure of glass is different to flint and why it is no use for making cutting tools but suitable for windows. 4. Quartz has properties that make it very useful in electronics. What are these properties and how are they explained by the atomic structure. 5. Silicon also has special electrical properties that make it very useful in micro-electronics. What are these 6. When glass is made into fibres and used to make GRP, the glass becomes useful as a structural material. Explain why this is so.

Explanation / Answer

1.

Out of these materials, Flint tool is crystalline in nature, as the atoms are very tightly placed with each other, Glass is amorphous as it is soft and made up of loosly bonded atoms and Quartz is a smart material.

2.

The atomic structure of Flint is very compact, all the atoms held closley together with each other. Due to this arrangement of atomic particles flint is very hard and hence was used as a cutting tool by the stone aged men.

3.

Glass is amorphous in nature, it is brittle as compared to flint and hence it is of no use for making cutting tools. But glass being transparent in nature is used in making windows. Apart from that glass is stiff and has a very high youngs modulus thus it doesnt have much affect of temperature changes, as well as it is scratch resistant which makes it ideal for making windows.

4.

Quartz crystals have piezoelectric properties; they develop an electric potential upon the application of mechanical stress. this property of quartz makes it a very usefull material for electronis.

5.

Silicon has a special property which makes it suitable for it to use in the micro electronics. Silicon is a semi conductor i.e. it allows the current to pass through it after some resistance. This property helps in the switching on and off of the transistors where they are used.

6.

Glass made into fibers are very usefull because they its easier to achieve total internal reflection in the glass fibres which has a tremendous application in communication optical fibre cables, helping in transferring internet at very high speeds.
