Question

1) How do efficient separations occur in columns filled with silica gel?

2) Silica gel is a non-poisonous solid that is sold in batches of different particle sizes. For column chromatography, the most commonly used material has a particle size of 35 to 70 m (often called “Flash Silica Gel”). This material can be handled without any safety concerns.

Please explain why the situation would change if you were to handle silica gel with a particles under 10 m. In other words, what safety concern should be addressed if you handle of super fine silica gel?   Please describe the effect that super fine silica gel can have on humans.

Explanation / Answer

silica gel made of polar silicon oxide. when mixture of compound passes through it the different compound seperated depending upon the polarity of the compound; the less polar compound comes first and the more polar compound comes later. additionally, polarity of the solvent can be varried according to the polarity of the compound mixture. this is how pure compound can be isolated from the mixture of compounds.
