Question

(a) Complementary colors are directly opposite each other on the "color wheel", shown below. Complementary colors cancel to white light The hydrogen emission spectrum has four lines (see lab data). If red, blue-green, blue- violet, and violet were all emitted, why did the lamp only appear to be blue-colored? Clearly explain your answer. (b) When looking at the mercury light directly with your eyes, does it look white? If not, what color does it exhibit? Explain. (c) When looking at the neon light directly with your eyes, does it look white? If not, what color does it exhibit? Explain.

Explanation / Answer

a) The spectra is missing. However, for each emission spectra the Intensity at which light gets emitted decides upon the final colour emitted to our eyes. Since the spectra is missing, my presumption is the light in the wavelength of of 450-480pm is the most intense.

b) Mercury is tainted blue however mercury lamps produce white light with a bluish-green tint due to mercury's combination of spectral lines

c) A pure neon light emits orange colour, however more often they get mixed with helium, xenon and others to produce shades of orange and red.

Hope this helped.
