PURIFICATION OF WATER

Materials: Test tube, test tube rack, muddy water, 1% AL2(SO4)3, 1% Na2SO4, 1%NaCl

Set up four tubess in the rack. To each, add 10 ml of muddy water. If the hud has settled, shake or stir the test tube.

Add 5ml water to the first test tube

Add 5ml 1% NaCl to the second test tube

Add 5mL 1% Al2(SO4)3 the third test tube

Add 5mL 1% Na2SO4 to the fourth test tube

Mix each test tube throughly by shaking and allow the test tube to stand for 10 minutes then observed, then again in 20 and 30 minutes. Write all your observations.

Question:

Which chemical produced the most rapid settling? why?

Please fill the blanks thanks you..!

Agent Added After 10 minutes After 20miutes After 30 minutes H20 (Reference) NaCl Al2(SO4)3 Na2SO4

Explanation / Answer

Mixing chemicals

Agent added : H2O (reference)

No change after 10, 20 or 30 min

Agent added : NaCl

Dissolve completely after 10 min, remain same until 30 min

Agent added : Al2(SO4)3

Dissolve after 20 min, remain same at 30 min. Settles down excess solid

Agent added : Na2SO4

Forms lump after 10 min and dissolve part of it completely. Settles down excess solid.

The solid which settles most rapidly is Al2(SO4)3 as it has least solubility.
