Question
The correct answer and work is given in bold (A, at equilibrium). I do not understand why it is correct though. Is Q always equal to K? Why is the value 5 known to be at equilibrium? Both written and mathematical explanations of why it is correct would be great. Thanks!
2. The equilibrium constant is equal to 5.00 at 1300 K for the reaction: 2 SO2 (g) O2 (g) 2 SO3 (g) If initial concentrations are ISO2] 1.200 M, LO2] 0.45 M, and ISO3] 1.80 M, the system is a) at equilibrium b) not at equilibrium and will shift to the left to achieve an equilibrium state c) not at equilibrium and will shift to the right to achieve an equilibrium state d) not at equilibrium and it is not known in which direction it will shift to achieve an equilibrium state hint: Consider and its relationship to Kand show work to receive partial credit.Explanation / Answer
K is given as 5.00 here
lets us calculate Q
Q = [SO3]^2 /[SO2]^2 [O2]
Q = 1.80^2 / (1.20^2 * 0.45)
Q = 5.00
we know that:
if Q=K, reaction is at equilibrium
So, the answer is a
