Question

Write proper chemical equations and balance the following reactions

            a)         Write a balanced chemical equation to represent the reaction of solid magnesium and gaseous oxygen to form solid magnesium oxide.

b)Write a balanced equation to represent the decomposition of solid ammonium nitrate into dinitrogen monoxide gas and liquid water.

c)Write a balanced equation to represent the reaction of the gases chlorine and ammonia (NH3) with an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide to form water, an aqueous solution containing sodium chloride, and hydrazine, N2H4.

Explanation / Answer

a)

Magnesium   +   oxygen   ------->   magnesium oxide

Mg      +       O2   --------->      MgO

                                                       Mg   +    O2   -------->    2 MgO

2 Mg   +   O2   -------->    2 MgO

b)

Ammonium nitrate (Soild) ------> dinitrogen monoxide (gas) + Water (liquid)

(NH4)(NO3) --------> N2O + H2O

Balanced Equation is,

NH4NO3 (Soild) --------->  N2O (Gas) + 2H2O (Liquid)

c) Chlorine(gas)+Ammonia + Sodium hydroxide ------> Hydrazine + water + sodium chloride

Cl(g) + NH3 + NaOH ------> N2H4 +   H2O + NaCl

Balancing Equation:

2 Cl(g) + 2 NH3 + 2 NaOH --------> N2H4 + 2H2O + 2NaCl

Magnesium   +   oxygen   ------->   magnesium oxide

Mg      +       O2   --------->      MgO

The oxygen atoms did not match so place a 2 in front of the MgO so that there are now two O on the right.

                                                       Mg   +    O2   -------->    2 MgO

Now the oxygen atoms balance but the magnesium atoms no longer match. We have placed a 2 in front of the MgO which means we have 2 Mg atoms and 2 O atoms in total. If we place a 2 in front of the Mg on the left side then we get a balanced equation.

2 Mg   +   O2   -------->    2 MgO

b)

Ammonium nitrate (Soild) ------> dinitrogen monoxide (gas) + Water (liquid)

(NH4)(NO3) --------> N2O + H2O

Balanced Equation is,

NH4NO3 (Soild) --------->  N2O (Gas) + 2H2O (Liquid)
