Question

Originally, an island had 120 snails but 6 snails were taken. They founded a new population. Suppose that the people had removed 50 snails from the original site (rather than six). Let’s assume that these 50 snails survived and reproduced on the new island. What effect would the larger sample size have on your results? Could you predict any shifts in the gene pool due to random genetic drift?

Now consider the two populations of snails living on a single island. Is it at all plausible that these populations might become reproductively isolated? If reproductive isolation does occur, describe some long-range consequences that you might expect to observe in the snail populations. If speciation were to occur on a single island, what types of adaptations might you expect to evolve in the WTSP predator population?

Explanation / Answer

What effect would the larger sample size have on your results? Could you predict any shifts in the gene pool due to random genetic drift?

The genetic drift is the change in ferquencies of the allele in apopulation due to random sampling of the organisms .the allele in the offspring are a sample of those in parents and there is a role in determining weather given indivdual survives and reproduces .genetic drift may cause individual to disappear completly or there by reduce genetic variation .

Founder effect is a special case when a small small group in a population splinters off from the original population and forms the new one .the random sample so of the allele is jsut the newly formed allele .it is even possible that number of alleles in the gene inoriginal population is much larger than the number of gene copies found in the founders ,making complete representation impossible .when newly formed colony is small ,its founder can strongly effect the population makeup ,this lead to large divergence in the population as the genetic distance increases ,the two seperated populations may become both phenotypically or genotypically leading to mutation . this lead to larger divergence in species .

reproductive isolation i s seen in the snalis . they are two type sof reproductive isolation one is prezygotic type of isolation and other is post zygotic isolation . temporal isolation this may be due to climatic changes or shifts ,mechanichal isolation and gamatic isolation are a types of prezygotic isolation . post zygotic include such as geographic isolation due to large climatic changes ,so it is possible for he populations of snalis to be reproductively isolated .adaptaion include adjustment to climatic changes .it is certainly possible for the population on the island may become reproductively isolated because of the seculation to different parts of the island ,the population m,ay go through the differnt form of natural selection.if speciation went to occur the WTSp predator may develop a taste for the species rather than original population to grow unchecked for the predators .
