80% 9:30 AM AT&T; 4G Question D. hardness q) is the alloying element on which ferrous metallurgy is based. A. Copper B. Aluminum C. Iron D. none of the above 7) Which periodic table property MoST determines an elements willingness to react? 1) the column 2) the row 3) the alphabetical order of the element's first letter 4) the atomic weight 8) Based on the previous question, what is the main reason for this reactivity? A) A higher number of protons make elements unstable, and more likely to react B) A lower number of neutrons than protons make elements unstable and more likely to react C) An unfilled outer valence shell of electrons make the atom more likely to react with ionic bonds DA gaseous element is ALWAYS more likely to react with another element than metals/liquids 16) Give 3 evamples of allowed metals which

Explanation / Answer

Ans.7: In a periodic table, every column, represents a group containing elements. Each elements in a group has similar physical and chemical properties, due to the same number of valence electrons. Depending upon the number of valence electrons, the group has been numbered, for example group I have alkali metals having 1 valence electrons in their outermost shell. Halogens belonging to group VII, have 7 valence electrons in their valency shell. These valence electrons are responsible for the chemical bonding and reactivity of the elements. Hence the answer is

1) the column

Ans.8: Based on the privious question, the main reason for this reactivity is the valence electron. As explained above valence electrons are responsible for the reactvity and chemical bonding of the elements. According to octet rule, elements having 8 electrons in their valency shell are stable and chemically inert. For example Group 8, elements have 8 electrons in their valency shell, they donot react chemically with other elements (Except Xenon). Hence they are called inert gases or noble gases. Therefore each element always try to get or loose electrons to satisfy octet. This basiclly happens in case of formation of ionic bond, where metals loose electrons to become electropositive and satifies octet and nonmetals gain electron to become electronegative and satisfies octet. As a result of which ionic bond is formed between the oppositly charged ions.

Hence the answer is c) An unfilled outer valency shell of electrons make the atom more likely to react with ionic bonds
