Ans 5. a) Racemic product

Radical reactions such as halogenation ( bromination , chlorination ) of alkanes ( methane , ethane ) , involves 3 basic steps namely , initiation , propagation and termination .

The radical intermediates produced in step 2 produce a sp2 hybridisation orbital with lone electron in vacant 2p orbital , so that the attack of radical electron can take place from the either side of C-H bond . This lead to the production of racemic mixture .
