Question
Using any two of the templates below, fill in all H's and alkyl groups to show the (A) most stable and (B) least stable conformations of nonane along the C2 - C3 axis. Do not use the "R" group abbreviation: use correct condensed formulas for alkyl substituent. Label the Newman projections as Most Stable and Least Stable. Carry out the same conformational analysis as in problem 1, but for the molecule, 2, 3 - dimethylhexane. Show and label the Newman projections for the most stable and least stable conformations along the C2 - C3 axis.Explanation / Answer
1) Nanometer is most stable in this case the staggered anti conformation is stable there is an increased possibility of the135° conformation having stability because of the distance between the bulk groups.
The staggered position has less potential energy. When a molecule is rotated about the carbon- carbon single bond the potential energy of the molecule increases.
2)Newman projection of2,3- dimethylhexane is most stable due to staggered position.
