Question

Lab4: Preparation of Strontium lodate Monohydrate Post-Laboratory Questions (use the spaces provided for the answers and additional paper if necessary.) 1. The success of this experiment is indicated by the percent yield of Sr(IO3)2.H2O. Proper laboratory technique contributes greatly to this success. Identify four critical steps in the procedure that could affect the percent yield. Explain how and why each would affect the yield. 2. A student prepared Sr(IO3)2.H20 following the procedure described in this module and reported a 105.2% yield As the student's teacher, comment on the validity of this percent yield. (2) What explanation would you give to the student as to how an apparent yield of 105.2% might have been obtained? What experimental errors might be involved? custom page 57

Explanation / Answer

Answer-1

Dear syudent,

The below four factor will be responsible for % yield

Answe-2

(1) Student has prepered Sr(IO3)2 H2O

As a teacher I would say that this yield is very high and it is not possible. Although has try best and accurate, but some mistake has been occur and as a result of that the yield is very high.

(2)

Yield is 105.2 %

Higher than expected yield can only be due to the presence of impurities caused by inadequate purification. ( assuming that no mathematical errors have been committed). It just remains to ascertain how such impurities have arrived there. It is usually because the product still contains solvent, but clearly it could still be mixed with other products or even reactants. It could absorb components from the air such as water vapour or carbon dioxide. The vessel used to collect the product could even be contaminated.
